You’ll hear some of the heaviest dub vibes ever when DubRising takes over The Plaza Nightclub (881 Granville Street) Wednesday, July 11 at 9 pm, bringing together three of the top-ranking dub operators on the planet: Adrian Sherwood’s OnU Sound System, Ryan Moore’s Twilight Circus Dub SoundSystem and west coast live crew Big Bass Theory for one great big night of space, bass and positive attitude. Be there when they take it to another level with the magic and mysterious live moments of beauty conjured by the performance artists of Nucleus and a live video mix by Chonka of nDimension Visuals.

DubRising is a part of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival’s 30th anniversary celebration and this dream of Dub takes the stage just as artists are arriving from the UK, Australia, and all over for the Festival weekend. Who knows who else may drop in to the mix that night?

Adrian Sherwood has created a universe of dub over the last 25 years – an original sound cutting hard-ass punk into some of the finest singers and players ever to move between the yards of Kingston and streets of Brixton. Into that mix came hip hop’s founding rhythm aces who created the crucial rhythms and riffs on the Sugar Hill records that broke it out of Brooklyn. When you mix together the three most powerful kinds of music on the planet - punk, dub and hip hop – with some of the most radical rhymers of the day speaking out, the result is a musical revolution that reverberated back and forth across Europe, Japan and North America and back to Jamaica. Twenty-five years later, he’s still a dub standard of excellence, fresher than the rest and all the places where dub has taken root.

Twilight Circus Dub SoundSystem is bassed – that’s right, bassed - in Amsterdam but the roots run back through time and space to Kingston, and to Vancouver. Twilight is the dubchild of Ryan Moore, a musical imagineer whose bass lines anchored bands like Animal Slaves way back. His dubplates reflect a love and respect for the originators in Studio One and the other labs where dub began. His musical vision continues to grow with each new release, and he’s earned global respect wherever there are listeners who love dub.
In 1997, he created the first Jericho dub sessions at the Festival and 10 years later he’s back for another chapter.

Big Bass Theory is some of the heaviest local BC dub sounds you’ll experience. Based on Saltspring Island and led by Sean ‘SirBassa’ Hill, Big Bass Theory is rooted in solid riddims with serious bass frequencies. Full of soaring horns, steady bubble and skank, their music uplifts the soul with positive sound and vibrations with a defininte dancehall feel and reggae groove.

Last year they were part of the biggest dub ever dropped in this town, shaking the foundations together with pioneering dub poets Lillian Allen and Clifton Joseph, Austria’s Dubblestandart, MC Jacob Cino and many other special guests. Everyone was shaking…and stirred.
Coming to you live and direct from The Plaza Nightclub on Granville Street. Some of the heaviest dub vibes this city has ever seen.
DubRising is just the beginning of the Festivals’ new chapter of Dub. The rhythm continues Saturday and Sunday at the Festival, with two big dub jams each day. With so many singers and players in the park and that festival vibe on the thing, there’s no telling who will be jamming with whom.

The Festival has always been a champion of value for your music money. At Jericho Beach Park, eight stages bring you more than 250 hours of live music to choose from in two and a half days, including more sets each day by each of these Sound Systems.

JAMAICA TO TORONTO
A Night of Ska & Raggae at The Yale Launches Festival Weekend

Event: Jamaica To Toronto at The Yale
Date: Thursday, July 12, 2007
Time: 9 pm Venue: The Yale (1300 Granville Street)
Tickets: $20 (plus service charges) online at www.thefestival.bc.ca
and $23 (plus services charges in person at Zulu Records and Highlife Records.
Information: 604.602.9798 or 800.883.3655.

Come and join the fun as the Vancouver Folk Music Festival kicks off their festival weekend with a special night at The Yale on Thursday July 12th featuring the group Jamaica to Toronto and DJ sets by Sipreano (aka Kevin Howes). An intimate and interactive performance by Jamaican legends of the reggae, deep soul and R & B scene, get ready to dance and groove the night away in one of Vancouver’s best ‘live’ rooms.

Jamaica to Toronto is a collection of singers, songwriters and musicians from Jamaica and the West Indies schooled in reggae, ska and rocksteady, who in the mid 1960’s immigrated to Canada searching for better living situations than those they had left behind.

Upon their arrival they did what came naturally to them. One by one, they hit the studio and captured some of the hardest tunes this side of Kingston, released independently on 45’s and LPs. This influx of exceptional musical talent from Jamaica to Toronto gave rise to a booming soul/R&B club scene that continued to thrive through the early 70s despite the general indifference of commercial radio, television and major labels.

Several decades later, Matt Sullivan, owner of Seattle label Light in the Attic and DJ / Journalist Kevin Howes (aka Sipreano), went on a mission of crate digging and exhaustive research, to rediscover these musical legends and reunite them together on stage. The album Jamaica to Toronto: Soul Funk and Reggae 1967-1974, was released last year followed by their first reunion sold out show at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre.

The Vancouver Folk Music Festival is pleased to present them at this year’s festival, their first Western Canadian performance.

DAL RICHARDS CELEBRATES CANADA DAY WITH A NEW BIG BAND CD
When most men his age are either no longer with us or sitting in an easy chair reminiscing about their youth, veteran Vancouver bandleader Dal Richards is releasing a new big band CD and launching it in a series of concerts over the next few weeks.

Dal just recently took his sixteen-piece orchestra into Armoury Studios to produce an exciting new live big band CD. Joined by his regular big band vocalists Bria Skonberg, Diane Lines, Jamie Croil and Jennifer Hayes and by special guest artist bluesman Jim Byrnes, the CD ‘Dal Richards and Friends’ features more than a dozen cuts of big band music at its best.

The CD will be released this week, just in time for a number of special event concerts for Dal and the band. He’ll have his full Dal Richards Orchestra at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival at noon Saturday, June 30th at David Lam Park; the Dal Richards Swing Band at two Canada Day events on Sunday, July 1st. They’ll be at Canada Day at Canada Place from 5 till 7pm - and at Mission’s Fraser River Heritage Park for a Canada Day concert Sunday night from 8:30 till 9:30. On Monday, July 9th Dal takes the band to Duncan, B.C. for a return engagement at the Duncan Cowichan Summer Festival; on August 2nd he’ll be in Abbotsford to open the Agrifair; and on Sunday, August 5th the band will be at White Rock’s Sea Festival for an afternoon concert and at West Vancouver’s Harmony Arts Festival for an early-evening show at 7:30. This will mark Dal’s fourth consecutive appearance at the Harmony Arts Festival; his first evening concert there.

From August 18th to September 3rd the 14-piece Dal Richards Orchestra will be playing two shows a day for all seventeen days of the Pacific National Exhibition – appearing daily at noon and two pm on the Rogers Amphitheatre Stage at the Fair; his sixty-eighth consecutive year playing the PNE.

And once the PNE ends Dal will start working on his schedule for 2008. He’ll play his 74th consecutive New Year’s Even gig on December 31st at the River Rock Resort and Casino, before taking a couple of days off to rest up before the Hotel Vancouver Dinner Dance and the Orpheum Concert that will celebrate his 90th birthday on January 5th and 6th next year. And never one to rest on his laurels, Dal is already booked for a number of big band shows in 2008 – including Centennial Celebrations for Victoria’s Empress Hotel on January 19th, and the city of Penticton’s centenary on April 19th.

After seventy-three years in the business Dal is still one of the busiest musicians in Vancouver…a must-have entertainer for weddings, birthdays, festivals, fund-raising concerts and corporate events. Whether it’s a quartet at a senior’s centre, a six-piece band at a wedding, a nine or eleven piece swing band for a convention or his fourteen piece big band at the PNE, Dal’s music is always enthusiastically received. From classic big band numbers from the thirties and forties to rock and roll, dance numbers and pop tunes, the Dal Richards Orchestra plays music to please all ages, and any occasion.

‘I’m still having fun leading the band and entertaining British Columbians’, Dal states. ‘Why quit now?’

More Than 100 Hours of Music on Eight Outdoor Stages …
The Vancouver Folk Music Festival has announced its lineup for the 2007 celebrations of “30 Years of Real Music” July 13, 14 and 15 at Jericho Beach Park. Musicians, dancers, poets and songwriters from around the world and across the street will gather for this annual celebration of traditional and contemporary folk and roots music.
“Musically, the world just keeps getting bigger”, notes Festival artistic director Dugg Simpson in announcing the lineup, “and there's more music coming in all the time.

“Meanwhile, it's probably not a big surprise to learn that we are a little nostalgic about hitting this particular calendar moment and have been working with artists on some new programming to celebrate the event.

“If you've been before, the only thing that's changed for this year's Festival is it's going to be better than ever. A little more acoustic, a little more kick, from that big band R&B you never get to hear anymore, to some dance steps out on the edge” says Simpson.

Programming Highlights …
Ganga Giri returns with a bigger band and some special video. Mihirangi, Tanya Tagag and Allison Russell, who joined in last year at the after-hours session on Sunday night, also return. There are singers and songwriters you've told us were your favourites in recent years, artists like David Francey, Andrea Koziol and The Wailin' Jennys, and singers including Sarah-Jane Morris and The Be Good Tanyas. And there's a special ninety minute gospel anniversary Sunday morning at Stage 2.

Ever heard music from Afghanistan? This is your chance. You can catch Toumani Diabate's Symmetric Orchestra on Saturday night and Los Munequitos de Matanzas all weekend long.

At the heart of this year's Festival is a celebration of right here and now, of some of the artists making music that all those worry warts wondering if we're world-class or not, have obviously missed. From deep roots to high-tech, Po'Girl, Steve Dawson, Rodney Decroo, Geoff Berner and The Be Good Tanyas., to turntables, bhangra and video, Vancouver is not just going to be in the house, it's going to be the house and it's going to be unforgettable.
The Life & Times of Ginger Goodwin pays tribute to the legacy of the activist coal miner whose shooting death was one of the catalysts leading to British Columbia’s first general strike.

The complete 2007 Festival lineup is now available online at www.thefestival.bc.ca.

There’s More Than The Music …
The Festival features more than 100 hours of music on eight outdoor stages -- three evenings of mainstage concerts and two full days of performances throughout the park. But there’s more than music to this unique weekend in the Park.

The Festival also features a twenty-vendor food area, a crafts market, a stage and activity area dedicated to the Little Folks and their families, and the Festival Community Village where local community-building organizations and businesses are represented.

All of this takes place in the spectacular outdoor setting of Jericho Beach Park, amidst groves of pine and cedar trees and against a backdrop of the beautiful mountains rising above a modern city skyline.

Beyond The Park ...
A major event on the world folk and roots music circuit, the Vancouver Folk Music Festival challenges audiences to expand their understanding and appreciation of what 'folk' can mean in a global context. Bringing attention to exciting young artists who are pushing the boundaries and honouring the elders of the tradition, the Festival is an acknowledged leader in creating new ways of working with artists in developing forums and vehicles for experimentation, improvisation and education.

Each year the Festival explores ways to pursue those goals and take the Festival beyond the Park. Some of this year’s special events include:

Folk Music Fridays at Capers. For the second year the Festival and Capers Community Market presents a series of free acoustic performances at the Capers Robson Street (1675 Robson) and Kitsilano (2285 West Fourth Avenue) locations. June 29 will find singer/songwriter Ora Cogan at Robson Street, and July 06 will see hip-hop, pop, jazz group DNA 6 at Kitsilano and innovative contemporary violinist Jaron Freeman Fox at Robson Street. Other performances will be announced shortly. All shows from 6 to 7 pm.

Live On The Drive. Wednesday, July 11 from 4 to 8 pm. This third annual free outdoor concert is presented by the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, CBC Radio and Britannia Community Services Centre. This year the partnership continues with the added support of the Commercial Drive Business Improvement Association. Appearing at Live On The Drive will be: The Fugitives with their accordion, guitar, piano, banjo and melodica backed mix of poetry and song; Los Munequitos de Matanzas, masters of traditional Cuban rumba; DNA6 with a blend of pop, hip-hop, funk and jazz; and Signia, a high-energy Vancouver bhangra-pop group.

DubRising.
