WORKSHOPS AND TRAINING

BEGINNER'S SCENE STUDY

Next Beginner's Scene Study Class begins Wednesday Nights July 4th with BART ANDERSON

Good acting means making good choices. Learning to make good acting choices is challenging, interesting and fun. In this four week class, we will introduce some acting principles, some foundations for creating character and some fundamentals of script analysis. We will also do Improvisation and warm ups every class.

Then you get to make some choices about the scene you will be working on. You will be encouraged to take some risks, and make choices that work for you, your scene partner and your audience. Principles of acting for the camera will be touched on, but the emphasis will be a pure scene study class covering the fundamentals of the craft.

Bart Anderson is a Ryerson Theatre School graduate and an established acting instructor, having worked extensively in film, television, and theatre since 1985. His film and television credits include roles in Human Cargo, Godiva's, Slither, DaVinci's Inquest, Cold Squad, and Millenium. Bart's live theatre appearances include a one-man show, At Demons With My Face, and several shows with the Shaw Theatre Festival. Bart received the Jessie Richardson Award for outstanding performance in 1998.

SUMMER IMPROV CLASSES WITH VEENA SOOD
As part of our ongoing mandate to create a program which develops various elements of the craft, the Studio on the Drive is proud to host accomplished actor and improviser VEENA SOOD for an ongoing series of classes starting in June.

Actors with Improvisation training:

Are endowed with the abilities to act and "be in the moment." They are able to create whole scenes and entertain audiences without advanced preparation. · Can change direction in a flash. Improvisation training enables actors to be more active, spontaneous and flexible. · Casting Directors, Producers & Directors know that improv-trained actors are more relaxed and confident in auditions. They see their instincts are focused and are more able to think on their feet.

This is NOT a Theatresports class. There is no pressure to be "funny" but rather the focus is on narrative, storytelling skills & spontaneity. The exercises free the mind; actors get energized, and use their imagination to suddenly invent stories without any effort. Comedy will be the inevitable (and hilarious) by-product.

Veena Sood spent 10 years working with improv Guru Keith Johnstone at Calgary's Loose Moose Theatre Company, best known for their invention of the global phenomenon Theatresports. She spent 12 years at The Vancouver Theatresports League, she's toured her improv shows throughout Canada & the U.K., and helped introduce Theatresports to San Francisco, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, & New Zealand. Veena is a 3 time Jessie nominee & winner for her theatre work, as well as a Leo Award winner for her film & TV work over the years.

ACTING WORKOUT WITH AARON CRAVEN
Thursday nights 6:30pm

This ongoing class is a mixture of Scene Study and On-Camera Audition technique. Actors are worked with specifically according to their needs and their career progression. This class does not stick to a format, but rather touches on elements of prepared scene work as well as the art of auditioning. Actors are given the opportunity to perform material from both Film/T.V and Stage, with the emphasis on tailoring the work for the camera. Aaron encourages actors to empower themselves and “own” spirited choices in their work. Improv warm ups are also done every class, making the class a workout for serious actors only.

Since graduating from The University of British Columbia in 1999, Aaron has had a variety of experience on both stage and screen. He has worked professionally in both Vancouver and Los Angeles, with credits including lead/supporting roles in Stargate SG1, Kyle XY, The L Word, The Unit, Smallville, Tru Calling, The Dead Zone, The 4400, Supernatural as well as several national commercials. On stage, Aaron has performed a number of roles, including the lead role in “Gaslight” at the Hudson Theatre in Los Angeles. He has also directed an all-female cast of David Mamet's Glengarry GlenRoss to critical and popular acclaim and has directed at The Vancouver International Fringe Festival. Between 2000 and 2004, Aaron was the creator and co-Artistic Director of The Actors’ Jam, a short play festival featuring local actors, directors and writers.

"Coachings with Aaron are always a great workout that empower me to carry a lot of confidence into the audition room. He helps to define and refine strong choices that are right for the character, the piece as a whole and me as an individual...I highly recommend the experience." (Allison Hossack - Series Regular on "Hope Island" and "Kingdom Hospital").

"Aaron understands the process an actor needs in rehearsals and bringing out a full performance from a piece of text. He knows how to work out the mental moves. Time well spent." (Veena Sood - "Third World" "Connie and Carla do LA", "Hope Island").

"Aaron Craven is a superb actor and gifted teacher. He is incisive and insightful, while establishing an emotionally safe environment for his class. I recommend his classes often and will continue to do so with great confidence." (Carol Kelsay - Casting Director)

Classes Thursday nights 6:30 pm. Call the studio for more info and registration. Previous training required.
